David Kramer
Singer Songwriter • Cape Town, WC, ZA
DAVID KRAMER’s interest and passion has, for forty years, been to explore a South African identity and tell stories with song. He wrote 6 musicals with the late Taliep Petersen, their focus being on the retelling of a suppressed history of the Cape. Kat and the Kings achieved international success playing on Broadway and the West End, receiving the Laurence Olivier Award in London for Best New Musical in 1999. Other international successes have been Ghoema (UK and Holland) Poison (Malaysia and UK) District Six (Scotland) and Koos Sas (UK) Karoo Kitaar Blues, a project that promoted the talents of eccentric guitarists and tin-can violinists is the subject of an award winning documentary, which originated as a series of concerts that were performed around South Africa. David holds an honorary Doctorate of Literature from UCT and an honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Stellenbosch. After Taliep Petersen's death in 2006 he wrote a tribute called The Kramer Petersen Songbook. This was followed by a new musical, Some Like It Vrot showcasing the talents of Marc Lottering who David directed for many years. Then he adapted and directed Willy Russell's Blood Brothers. A career highlight was being invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2015, where together with his band he showcased the music of the Cape. In February 2015 he opened his new musical Orpheus in Africa at the Fugard Theatre and a year later he wrote and directed District Six - Kanala to commemorate the fifty year anniversary of District Six as a white group area. For this he won a Fleur du Cap award. More recently he has been working with rapper Vito Heyn from Namaqualand and created a new musical Amper Famous for the 2017 KKNK in Oudtshoorn.
