General FAQ Answers
What is ReverbNation?
ReverbNation.com is a place where artists, fans, labels and venues interact with each other for mutual benefit. Fans can create and share playlists, promote the artists they love, and track the success of artists over time. For artists, ReverbNation.com is more than just a place to do self-promotion, its an invaluable source of information about their fans, venues and other similar artists AND a place to conduct the business of being a musician — including tools for distribution, merchandising, and communication. For Venues and Labels, ReverbNation gives you an outlet to promote yourself, and tools to understand, locate, and interact with artists and fans.
Is membership free?
Yes.
Is the music free?
Much of it is. Artists determine that on a song-by-song basis.
Do the artists get paid?
Yes. Artists will be paid a portion of the advertising revenue in proportion to their popularity on the site. This program is called FairShare. You can find out more on FairShare by clicking Here.
I forgot my password. How do I retrieve it?
From the login page, follow the link that says "Forgot my password."
I forgot my username. How do I retrieve it?
From the login page.
How are the rankings/charts determined?
Our charts represent a variety of data gathered on the site including number of times played, number of fans, number of times songs are added to user libraries, number of playlist appearances, and number of downloads. It's a lot of math, but Steve keeps it straight.
Is there an easy way to share my music from ReverbNation with my friends?
Sure, click the "Share" button on your artist profile page.
Artist FAQ Answers
What is an artist page?
An artist page is the epicenter of life for artists on ReverbNation. From here artists manage their page (including blogs, tour dates, pictures, etc), upload audio and video, access promotion, distribution and communication tools, and interact with their fans.
I can't log in. I know I registered. What's up?
You should have received a verification email shortly after signing up with instructions on verifying. (It's simple — just the click of a link.) If you did not receive this, first check your junk box or spam folder and make sure it did not accidentally end up there. If that doesn't work, send your band email address and name to support@reverbnation.com, and we will help you.
How do I change my band's genre or the email addresses we have listed?
Click on "Admin/Tools" and then click "edit artist information" on your profile page
How do I change the password to my account?
Click on the "PREFS" link on the upper headliner bar (this only appears when you are logged in).
What songs can I upload?
ReverbNation's player requires MP3 files no larger than 8MB, with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz. We suggest a bitrate of 160 kb/s.
How do I upload songs onto my artist profile page?
Click "Upload Song" and follow the instructions. Songs must be in MP3 format, be no larger than 8MB, and have a sample rate of 44.1 kHz..
My songs are not uploading properly, what gives?
First, try it a second time. Then, try it again. If it still doesn't work, it may be a technical problem on our side - the Nation's computers are occasionally fussy. Before you contact us at technical@reverbnation.com, double check that the file is not corrupt and that your connection is stable.
My song sounds too slow/fast! What's going on?
The ReverbNation Flash player assumes that the MP3 files it plays have a sample rate of 44,100 Hz. If your song sounds too fast (as if the Chipmunks performed it) or too slow (as if it were in a slow-motion replay), it probably has a sample rate higher or lower than that. Re-encode your MP3 with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz (or 44.1 kHz) and upload it again.
How do I reorder my songs on my artist profile page?
Reordering can be done with simple drag and dropping. Remember, the song at the top of your list is the sample song that appears in user searches to represent your band. For this reason, it is recommended that your first song NOT be exclusive.
How do I upload photos to my artist profile page?
Click the "Photos" Tab on your artist profile page and then click "New Photo" and follow the on-screen instructions.
How do I enter shows to my artist profile page?
Click the "Shows" tab on your artist profile page and then click "New Show". Fill in the appropriate information in the pop-up module and click "Add". For more information, check the Tutorial.
How do I link up to other artists I like on ReverbNation?
Click the "Become A Fan" button under any Artist's photo who you would like to link to as one of your "favorites".
Where are all of these "Widgets" I keep hearing about located?
Widgets are all located on the "Widgets" tab of your artist profile page. For information on how and why to deploy your widgets, watch the Tutorial.
What is a TunePak and how do I create one of my music?
TunePaks are customizable playlists of your music that can be pasted into an Instant Message, blog, email, or anywhere else. TunePaks are stand alone music players that are activated by clicking a movable link. To create a TunePak, click the "Share" button above your library. To see play information on already created and sent TunePaks, click the "TunePaks" tab on your artist profile page. For specific song stats, visit the "Stats" section of the Admin/Tools.
Where do I find statistics on my plays, etc.?
Check out the "Stats" section of your Admin/Tools.
How do I sell my songs on ReverbNation?
You can sell your songs through the "StoreLink" section in the Admin/Tools.
What does it mean when contacts in FanReach are "Pending"?
Pending contacts are contacts that you recently imported. Upon import, all contacts are sent a confirmation email allowing them the opportunity to opt-out of your mailing list if they wish. These confirmations are sent out in small "packets" over 72 hours, depending on the size of your import. You are NOT allowed to email "Pending" contacts. If a user opts-in within the 72 hours, they will be moved in to your contacts and you are allowed to email them. If, after 72 hours, nothing has happened, these contacts will also be moved into your database and you will be allowed to send mail to them.
Where do the addresses I collect from my FanCollector go?
Right into your FanReach contacts!
How can I get my music/band featured on the main page?
Send an email to featuredartist@reverbnation.com and tell us why you/your band should be selected. Be sure to include how you have used ReverbNation's tools to your advantage in helping spread your music.
Someone has put up a band page with my band's name on it! What do I do?
Send an email to squatters@reverbnation.com and let us know what you would like us to do.
What is a 'fan exclusive' song?
'Fan exclusives' are a great way to provide casual listeners with an incentive to become registered fans, join your mailing list, and/or provide information about themselves like age, gender, and location so that the Artist can get some additional benefit out of providing great music for them to enjoy. ReverbNation does not recommend making all of an Artist's songs 'fan exclusives'. A 'fan exclusive' means that unidentified listeners will only be able to hear the first 30 seconds of your song. They will be prompted to become a registered fan of the Artist in order to access the full stream or download (depending on the settings you choose in the song dialog box). In order to register as a fan, they will have to provide contact info and/or demographic info about themselves. The fan will be sent a confirmation email to make sure they are not using bogus identification to access the song. Once confirmed, they will be given access to the full song stream and/ or download. 'Fan exclusive' songs will NOT appear on Facebook MyBand applications, or on any of the widgets EXCEPT for the Tunewidget (those additions will be coming over the next few months). On the Tunewidget, the listener can input all of their info directly into the widget, no matter where it lives on the web.
To make a song a "Fan Exclusive", simply choose that option when you upload. If you want to change an existing song to a "Fan Exclusive", click on the 'edit song' button next to the song and change the setting to one of the 'fan exclusive' options. You must enable FanReach to use the exclusive song features.
How do I get my files into mp3 format so that I can upload them to my profile?
There are several ways to make your files mp3s and several converters on the Internet. If you know what file format your songs are in already, you can Google for a way to convert them (For example, if your files are .wma files, then Google for "convert wma to mp3") and you will find many different ways. If you have your songs on CDs, you can use iTunes easily to convert by following these steps:
1. Download iTunes for free at www.itunes.com
2. Open iTunes and click Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing > drop down menu choose MP3 ENCODER
3. Insert your cd into your computer and click IMPORT
4. This will import the tracks from your CD to your computer in mp3 format.
If you already have them in iTunes, follow step 2, and then right click on any song and click "CONVERT SELECTION" and it will convert the file.
The system says my file needs an "mp3 extension," what does that mean?
This either means that your file is not in the mp3 format, or that the filename does not have the required ".mp3" extension on the end of the filename
I'm not a US resident, so I can't use Snocap. How can I sell my music on ReverbNation?
You can sell your music on ReverbNation using any online digital retailer you would like. When you sign up for a service like CDBABY, iTunes, Tunecore, Nimbit, etc, they will provide you with either a link to your store site, or an HTML "store code." Place the link to this site or the code in the appropriate area of StoreLink (located in Admin/Tools) normally.
How do I remove my artist account from ReverbNation?
We will be sorry to see you go, but if you choose to remove your profile from ReverbNation, simply login and click Admin/Tools, Edit Artist Information, and Remove Profile.
