For over a decade, Upstairs Records' Recording Artist ANGELINA has managed to keep her music on radio airwaves, concert line-ups, and DJ mix shows. Yet, Angelina’s singing career was never quite a traditional journey, having taken off at a record pace.
Fiercely proud of her Latino heritage, and wanting to be a positive role-model, she excelled in her academics, graduated with honors, and was the first person from her family to go to a University. In order to afford her tuition, she worked at NUMMI during the summer, a car assembly plant in which she performed such tasks as installing car batteries and welding gas tanks. While she was considering taking time off from school because money was becoming scarce, she attended an open audition held by Upstairs Records.
Within two weeks of being chosen at the audition, she signed a record deal and recorded her smash hit single "Release Me.” After “Release Me,” an indie label dance phenomenon that skyrocketed to Top 10 on the Billboard chart, Angelina’s self-titled album dominated dance charts with hit follow-up singles, including “I Don’t Need Your Love,” “Without Your Love” and “Tide Is High,” all which charted on Billboard's Top 100. "Notice Me" and "Runaway," which she recorded with her label-mates NB Ridaz, also made it to Billboard's Top 100.
Angelina went on to release three albums as a groundbreaking Latina solo artist, with her trademark bilingual verses. Notable songs were “Every Time I Think Of You,” produced by A.B. Quintanilla, and “Bailando,” which earned her a Latin Billboard nomination for “Best Dance Single.” During her singing engagements around the globe, Angelina juggled college studies and graduated from Santa Clara University.
In 2005, Angelina took a unique opportunity and branched out into working for radio. She became co-host of a daily morning show at KPTY in Houston, TX, where her voice was no longer just on records but on the air-waves as a radio personality. Also in 2005, she leveraged her status in the music industry with becoming the Spokesperson for Education is Freedom (EIF).
Shortly thereafter, she began a new musical adventure that led to the creation of The New Ridaz. In 2006, NB Ridaz was the number one Latin hip-hop group in the country. Angelina – which had already contributed to some of their biggest hits such as “Perfect Man,” “Runaway,” “Notice Me” and “4-ever” since their second Nastyboy Klick CD – was asked to officially join the group with Dos and ZigZag. The threesome flipped their name to the New Ridaz and their first single gave birth to a mid-tempo love song titled “Special Girl.” The music video became a fan favorite on the web, with millions of views.
While touring with the New Ridaz, life took a huge turn. Tragedy struck during the Christmas holidays when Angelina’s brother and cousin were killed in a senseless, random shooting. Although she hasn't released any new music since then, she has continued touring, and has been writing music for other recording artists.
