BrahmaKhyapa is a musical duo, created by two proficient creative artists Sanjay and Malabika based in India. They are considered one of the most serious Baul musicians in contemporary Bengal. BrahmaKhyapa's music is a journey that speaks of human life much like the baul does through his different philosophies which govern the soul and the body. A rigorous journey of more than two decades into the heart of these traditions provided them a first-hand view of the culture that lies beneath. Their sole creed is to popularize this folk tradition just to live the music. "LOVE, LIVE, LET LIVE" is the true essence of their philosophy. BrahmaKhyapa works with urban and folk musicians from across India to develop their genre of music. They also often collaborate with Jazz, Blues and Hip-hop musicians from the world and have given a new dimension to the music of Bengal. Their concerts are inimitable and motivating as they feature musicians from rural and urban settings, as well as their diverse use of musical instruments which include traditional Indian, folk and Western instruments and Malabika’s poignant voice. BrahmaKhyapa collaborated as a duo as well as solo with noted International artists Tony Roberts, Laura Cortese, Jenavieve Varga, Devin Greenwood, Christopher Marianetti, Michel Massot, Emre Gultekin and has been the featured in of some of the leading media in India and abroad and has been showcased in a number of applauded documentaries and films like Love In India, A Baul The Baul, Bye Bye Bangkok to name a few. The duo is keen on focusing on education through initiating projects like Jungle Music School, Train of Light, Artist Community Residency where they rigorously organized events and workshops for marginalized communities and children. The duo further curates cultural exchange programs and residencies like Strisvara and offers cultural tourism through programs like passionate tours. As a recent progress BrahmaKhyapa is collaborating with Auster Loo, (Flute and Darbuka, Oriental percussions and drums) creating a quartet. They have been roped in for Auster Loo’s debut album from Home Records (Belgium) due to release in October 2016. The quartet independently recorded an EP featuring guest artists and is awaiting a record label. Malabika Brahma: Malabika has a distinctive voice and her rare renditions of folk songs have made her a favorite of many prodigious musicians across the world. She grew up singing Indian Classical Music as well as Rabindrasangeet (songs of Tagore) since she was 3 years old. Malabika graduated in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University. She was influenced by the prevailing religious mood such as Vedic Hinduism the teachings of Shree Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda, Kabir. She has worked in different musical projects across the globe and has been a part of the much acclaimed International Cultural Exchange programs of U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs like One Beat , Next Level, and American Music Abroad Program. As a part of her independent musical journey she has sang in many Indian films like Gulaab Gang, Houseful, Postmaster, to name a few and collaborated with artists Don Bhat, Mitya Burmistrov aka Masta Mic (Russia) . Currently apart from her musical career she is pursuing independent research work in the field of cultural diversity and inter-personal human relationship through audio-visual project Life of a wandering Minstrel. She has worked with Kolkata based photo agency Drik, where she coordinated and organized innovative photography workshops Making Images with remarkably skilled photographers has been featured in photo-story Song of Struggle. She currently works as a Cultural Director for the International organization, Levantine Public Diplomacy and collaborates independently with organizations lending her ideas for coordinating social engagement and residency programs for artists and youth. Sanjay Khyapa: Sanjay, a prolific guitarist, co-founder of rock band Cactus (pioneering rock music in Bengal) and music producer had been experimenting with baul music since the 1990s. He restructured baul, bhatiyali and shyamasangeet into reggae and blues with his solo project, Kolkata that was widely acclaimed and gained immense popularity in a short while as maiden album, man tare is the only bangla singles sold in the post-record era. Sanjay who had already been the pioneer in baul fusion genre has traveled across the world showcasing his music. He has been associated with a number of prestigious concerts in the country with his previous rock band Cactus as well as BrahmaKhyapa and his other personal projects which bagged him several awards including the Anandaloke Award for two consecutive years. Apart from being a diverse and critically admired musician Sanjay is an inspiring teacher and yoga expert who enjoys spreading awareness of education through music in his remarkable Jungle School in a tribal village near Santiniketan.
