Finite Automata

Finite Automata began as a solo project in the summer of 2006 by front-man Mod Eschar (Dom Price) in Pensacola, FL. In 2007 Eschar was joined by core member c. Grendel (Chris Stanley); inspired by the groundbreaking works of Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and other electronic acts such as Severed Heads and Project Pitchfork, the duo began to churn out a sonic onslaught of haunting melodies and demented mentally vexing vocals. They were joined later that same year by guitarist, keyboardist, and gadgetrist Mat Syn (Mat Porter), a seasoned musician from Pensacola. The group has had a few lineup changes over the years, but Syn and Eschar remain at the project’s creative core. The group began to become recognized nationally after a chance conversation between Eschar and Ben V of the Ludovico Technique, which resulted in their being invited to play the Florida Underground Industrial Music Festival in Orlando for four consecutive years and their signing to Beyond Therapy Records in 2011. Over the course of their career, they have shared the stage with Combichrist, Slick Idiot, God Module, and Ludovico Technique. Theatrics feature prominently in Finite Automata’s performances. Wire, knives, props, dolls, mock suicides, and copius amounts of stage blood combined with additional actors and light shows have been used in numerous live showcases. Eschar’s stage antics vary from slow paced creeping to bursts of rampant psychopathic energy. The group’s overall delivery and lyrical themes challenge the listener into forming their own opinions on the controversial subject matter they touch upon in their music. They’ve been compared to Skinny Puppy and Project Pitchork, an referred to as a welcome throwback to the harsher, heavier aesthetic of mid 80 - mid 90’s electro-industrial. However the group does not to limit itself, and forges a fresh reconciliation of the new school with the old. To date, Finite Automata released their EP release Here Won No One (2011), and their örst full length album Recurse (2012). Their current creation entitled Dogma Eye, is tentatively slated to be released within the next year and differs in both aesthetic and theme from it’s predecessor. Eschar states the album’s central theme is “control” and “coercion”. The group currently resides in Atlanta, GA.
