“The Cameroonian master musician Franck Biyong remains an enigma on his kick-ass new single for Tangential Music. Only he could follow up his brilliant tribute to the great musicians of Africa on his 2024 album - 'Radio Masoda' - with a tough-as-nails psychedelic blues-rock tune that channels Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles and a host of Afro Rock and boogie blues devotees.”
“The year is coming to an end, so it’s time to share my list of the best (world music) albums of 2024. It's been another good year for music, and I’ve selected 100 albums that are absolutely worth a listen. The ranking is based solely on personal criteria, and if I were to reorder the list, many positions would probably change. However, it’s not so important which album is in which position; what matters is that there really was a lot of great music in 2024. I’ve divided my list into two parts — this is the first part with the albums ranked 100 to 51, with two positions containing two albums each. You’ll understand why. Each album includes links to Bandcamp, Tidal and Spotify (where available), so feel free to check some of them…”

“Franck Biyong’s album, Radio Masoda is a remarkable tribute to the classic era of African music. Produced as an inter-African dance album, it features notable international collaborators, including Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, Sandra Nkaké, and members of Kwashibu Area Band and Egypt 80. The album highlights both creative freedom and world-class musicianship, intertwining various African musical styles into a joyful listening experience. Biyong designed Radio Masoda as a homage to 20th century African musical pioneers, especially Congolese rumba performers, who influenced artists across the continent. The record also functions as an “Afro music library,” reflecting influences from African legends and originators. Dedicated to his mentor, Manu Dibango, Radio Masoda masterfully weaves together Central Africa’s flavorful makossa with other stirring danceable genres like Afrobeat, Congolese rumba, soukous, and Ghanaian highlife.”

“Among the new albums from around the world, the focus was on Cameroonian musician Franck Biyong. He tirelessly releases albums year after year, often with somewhat experimental work, but Radio Masoda is a fully-fledged afrobeat/highlife album with lots of groove and excellent guest musicians. One of the tracks features the late Tony Allen, so I followed it up with a few more songs featuring the legendary Nigerian drummer.”

“Tangential Music are celebrating Fela Kuti's birthday today with a 4-track EP from Franck Biyong's album 'Radio Masoda', its like icing on the cake. As fans of the album 'Radio Masoda' that came out back in May, (see review HERE) is supplemented with 'Jela Kubwa' remixed by Aint4perfect (getting a bit of a groovy slo-jam vibes), 'Oladipo' featuring Chief Udoh Essiet and Fela's co-hort at the formation of Afrobeat Tony Allen (RIP) with a Yann Jankielewicz remix, 'Mbopi Road' (Max Doblhoff Remix) and the 'original' Aint4perfect / Franck Biyong track, 'London to Nairobi'. Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome Kuti was born this day in Abeokuta, Nigeria in 1938 and there's no better way to celebrate his birthday with remixed tracks of Cameroonian guitarist/singer/composer Biyong who spent 12 years working with Tony Allen with 'Oladipo' being a tribute track.”

““Radio Masoda”, the new album by the Cameroonian master musician and composer Franck Biyong, blends Central Africa's widely influential Makossa music with afrobeat, Congolese rumba and soukous, Ghanaian highlife and other regional styles. A tribute to the classic/golden age of African music, and how Congolese rumba served as a bedrock for artists and musicians all across Africa. Ẹ̀rín Collective from Bologna, Italy, also dives into the Golden Age of Nigerian music to create a debut album of fresh & contemporary global afrobeat.”
“Dedicated to his mentor Manu Dibango, ‘Radio Masoda’ masterfully blends Central Africa’s widely influential Makossa magic with Afrobeat, Congolese rumba and soukous, Ghanaian highlife and other regional styles to create something that sounds both familiar and fresh. A highly prolific artist, with over nineteen albums released, Franck has explored decades of African music styles with an historian’s detailed eye and an artist’s need to reinvent. His deftness at cherry picking what he needs from traditions and blending them together with contemporary production techniques makes this a record for now.”
“Debbie Golt FRSA takes African music and wider arts and culture as her starting point. Disfruta”

“Part of this shake-up is Biyong’s critique of how poorly African pioneers have been honoured for their works. “Since Fela disappeared, we haven’t managed to create what reggae music created in terms of permanence. I wanted to pay homage to these giants before they fall off the radar.” The result is eight tracks that take listeners on what Biyong describes as “a musical safari.” It begins with a stop in ‘Kabasele Kingdom’ where he pays homage to Congolese rumba legend Le Grand Kallé: “We failed to revere this founding father of African music in the way Cubans revere Machito or the Arab world worships Oum Kalthoum,” he admits drily.”
“Magazine Review Date: July/2024 On this, his latest of 20 albums, the Paris-based guitarist and composer adds to his native Cameroonian music generous pinches of makossa, Afrobeat, Ghanaian highlife and Congolese rumba and soukous to create – with the help of guests such as Tony Allen and fellow Parisian, vocalist Sandre Nkaké – something joyful and, as Biyong suggests, “a tribute to the… golden age of African music.” Several tracks resonate with the spirit of his mentor, Manu Dibango”

“In tonal heaven, all the way... Leave it to Franck Biyong to genuinely surprise you. The next song has the soul of rock, but teases with tones and compositional parts that you’d never put together. He is able to manipulate the feelings of a voice you can never hear, just by how he composes. Fever might be one of my favourites from this talented artist, with elements of blues, soul and rock convening in grace. Music Better proceeds with a funky effect, and a unique time signature. Just this can give you a nice peek into his brain, where you’re also hearing a Hendrix like riff with percussions that are clearly having African roots. There is this cinematic edge to his music because of the experience and civil way he performs the marriage of such different genres. Moonwatching 2 is thematically perfect, these are his thoughts and muses without trying to disturb the sonic membrane of either of these genres.”
“The keen reader will be acutely aware of talented ‘Afrolectric’ creator Franck Biyong. Having appeared in our publication already with ‘Silence is Music’, we know a thing or two about him too. A nuanced and experienced guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Biyong champions a truly organic and authentic artistry, preferring electric, actual instruments to modern digital stylings. Drawing from his African roots and the wider Jazz and Funk tradition, Franck builds sonic landscapes which are hypnotising and charming, while also packed with great musicianship. ‘Moonwatching 2’ is Biyong’s latest effort, a powerful and colourful jump into everything the project stands for. Creating a meaningful and wholesome bridge between African elements and Western influences, he discovers something new; the union of two cultures and traditions. The result is both musically and socially relevant. A long yet lively album, ‘Moonwatching 2’ flourishes over seven groovy and playful tunes, p”

“Franck moves the limitations of African music with Moonwatching II, extending the palette of newer sounds in creative guitar music. As Afropop and Nigeria's Afrobeats are recognized worldwide, African rock is almost missing, although it’s one of the fundaments of Western rock music. Is Franck Biyong the African Jimi Hendrix? Well ... Let’s say it this way: Moonwatching II combines the abrasive sonics of James Blood Ulmer with the melodic structures of early progressive and art-‐rock. So yes, Franck (who by the way never intended to copy Jimi) naturally deals with similar topics and sounds in his music… Driven by eerie melancholy, surreal guitars, ghost voices and strong musicianship, the psychedelic music does not get transfigured through the gentle but clear melodic lines...With Moonwatching II, Franck Biyong swaggers from Funkadelic style rock before leading us to Frippertronics-‐likesound scapes...”

“Florie Namir is a London-based Israeli singer songwriter who first appeared on this blog at the beginning of last year through her EP I Wanna Be In Love. Jane even followed up her review of it with an interview. Now it’s my turn to share her music. Her latest is a team up with Cameroonian “guitar wizard” Franck Biyong. It’s called Silence Is Music. You could roughly describe Silence Is Music as jazz, but the descriptor isn’t quite accurate enough. With elements of folk, country, and experimentation in there, it’s quite unlike anything I’ve heard before. Florie and Franck’s vocals work perfectly together to deliver their message of finding a moment of peace in an anxious world. Alongside Franck and Florie, we’re treated with double bass from Lila Horovitz and cello from Tess Crowther. Percussion, guitar, keys and song writing come from Franck. If you’re looking for something calming yet challenging to listen to today, look no further than Silence Is Music. You can ”
“Tel Aviv-born singer-songwriter Florie Namir and Cameroonian musician Franck Biiyong join creative forces to produce captivating new piece ‘Silence Is Music’. Opening with soothing acoustic guitar chords and gentle foot-tapping beats, the record offers a blissful moment of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Untainted by heavy production, the contrast between Namir’s angelic echoing harmonies and Biyong’s soulful vocals gives the record an undeniable sense of depth and tonal diversity. The unique collaboration between the two very different artists serves as the perfect reminder of the unitive power of music.”
“South East London-based Israeli singer-songwriter Florie Namir is, of course, my bandmate in The Music of Sound. But she is also an accomplished solo artist and she has now teamed up with Cameroonian artist Franck Biyong on a track entitled Silence is music. It has a lilting Jazz-tinged undercurrent with shimmering guitar chords and Florie’s classy piano leading the instrumental backdrop along with some distinctive percussion. But it is the quality of Florie’s and Franck’s voices that make this track so goose-bumping. Both have highly distinctive and richly beautiful voices that gel effortlessly as they bring a sweet song that oozes class from start to finish.”
“Historically, when the global order seems to be reaching a boiling point, art comes to the rescue. In fact, one could argue that the primary role of artists is to inspire, empower and drive cultural change, striving for the better. Well, Florie Namir and Franck Biyong do exactly that. After connecting through digital avenues, the two musical heroes used their combined strengths to create a stunning piece of lyrical sensibility, ‘Silence is Music’. On an eclectic bed of soothing, jazzy afrobeat, the two talents declare a message of cooperation and peace, birthing a relatable song that seeks to highlight the power of dialogue and self-acceptance. This is a much-needed statement, especially during volatile and complex times. It also works very well with Namir and Biyong’s artistries. The evocative vocals of the Israeli songstress pair perfectly with Biyong’s masterful guitar playing and charming, soulful vocal tone. Recommended!”

“When it comes to his own music, Trevas is not one to be pigeon holed. “Franck Biyong 957 is a piece of digital artwork by Tony Adamo which was uploaded on February 21st, 2023.”
“Silence Is Music might sound like something John Cage would say, but this jazzy number is characterised not by sparseness but by plush depth. As Florie Namir and Franck Biyong deploy a rainbow of sonic textures with subtle grace, you get the feeling that they really can hear music in everything. It’s a song you can settle right into. Franck already has a stunning career behind him. He’s pioneered his own fusion genre of ‘Alternative Afro-Electro-Rock’, and having released an album every year since 2017 shows no sign of slowing down. Singer-songwriter and classical composer Florie, meanwhile, won the UK Songwriting Contest in February 2021 in the Jazz category. No surprise, then, that their collaboration should produce such a welcoming, elegant, and original result.”
“Now to a name recognisable to Fifty3 Fridays aficionados yet in an unfamiliar guise. London-based, Tel Aviv-born singer-songwriter and pianist Florie Namir brings a wonderfully vibrant blend of 1940’s American jazz vocal stylings to her classic pop music influences. For her latest release, Florie has teamed up with afroelectric artiste, Franck Biyong. The pair met through the Beyond Music platform founded by Tina Turner which sets out to connect musicians from all kinds of genres worldwide. Inspired to create new music, they were quick to produce “Silence Is Music” composed by Franck who also wrote most of the lyrics, with Florie contributing the final verse. “Silence Is Music” was put together in just 11 days, taking its creators in different directions from their usual paths, while integrating their individual styles and influences. The instrumentation includes parts added remotely by Canadian cellist Tess Crowther and Argentinian double bass player Lila Horovitz.”
“It’s #NEWRELEASEFRIDAY! We bring to you our hottest finds of the week. “Their voices are very different, Frank has a soulful touch whereas Florie’s vocals are suited to folk/jazz but they find a middle ground, and this song is a perfect vehicle for this. It’s an acoustic number, the percussion is gorgeous, something that tends to get buried just for ear candy but everything in this track has a purpose… hold up is that a tabla? Nice! And the string arrangement is beautiful too. The harmonies that are used here are what caught my ear initially, and that’s my favourite part of the song, Florie and Franck’s ability to just meld together makes me want to give them a round of applause.”
“Soft guitar melodies, jazzy percussion, and quiet vocals build up a calm, soulful atmosphere, where hope and gratitude can bloom comfortably, and there is no more space left for hurting feelings. “Silence is Music” is a serene ode for nourishing dialogue and self-acceptance, setting itself as a reminder that the best way to overcome the crushing bad feelings is reaching out. Florie’s tender vocals are joined by those of Franck Biyong, a Cameroonian guitarist. The duo co-wrote the song, aiming to bring out the anxious feeling so common in such situations, and using delicate instrumentation as well as their singing voices to produce a layer of solace. Magical strings were added to the mix by Argentinian double bass player Lila Horovitz and Canadian cellist Tess Crowther.”
“What they made after is the furthest thing from chance. Like a moment that is meant to happen, they put their minds together to create something magical in just 11 days. This is their single, Silence is Music. Brace yourself for a moment that might be as brilliant as it is intoxicating. Franck Biyong has remodeled what we know about Afroelectric guitar. With a style that is so uniquely cultural and melodic, this song shows Florie Namir’s vocal presence with Franck Biyong’s work. The dreamy tune dances within a well arranged soundscape, and everything is balanced to let the vocals shine. The chords dance as an accompaniment, letting the spotlight fall on the incredible illusion of the instruments. Double bass player Lila Horovitz and cellist Tess Crowther add a playful rhythm around it that is unique, yet proceeds to aid the floating theme of this song. As the percussion dances in tandem with the instruments, you feel yourself sink into the depth of the song.”
“Our best collection of the most promising and upcoming Jazz musicians from around the world! A perfect mix of old-school classics with beautiful modern tracks! Track n°6 - SIlence is Musc by Florie Namir & Franck Biyong”
“Florie Namir and Franck Biyong have come together to create “Silence Is Music”, a soothing song reflecting on conflict and its potentially devastating consequences on us all. The melodies and sounds bring forth a melancholic call for spiritual relief. Florie, Israeli native London-‐based jazz-‐pop songstress and Franck, Cameroonian Afrolectric guitar wizard met through the Beyond Music platform founded by Tina Turner, which aim seeks to connect musicians from all genres and walks of life worldwide. “Silence Is Music” was conceived in a mere 11 days, inspiring these creative performers on a different route, while incorporating their individual styles and personal influences. Talented female musicians added further powerful and heartfelt instrumentation: Argentinean double bass player Lila Horovitz and Canadian cellist Tess Crowther.”

“Traditional Yoruba music, jazz, West African highlife, and funk were combined to create the musical genre known as afrobeat in the 1960s and 1970s. The Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, known for his colorful personality, musical prowess, and involvement in post-colonial African politics, is credited with creating the original afrobeat genre. Following in the footsteps of Fela Kuti are Afrobeat musicians from the 2000s and today, such as his sons Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti, Franck Biyong & Massak (from Cameroon), Segun Damisa & the Afro-beat Crusaders, Shaolin Afronauts (from Adelaide, Australia), Newen Afrobeat (from Santiago, Chile), Eddy Taylor & the Heartphones (from Cologne, Germany (from Vilnius, Lithuania),Afrodizz and Dele Sosimi and the ex-Africa ’70 members Oghene Kologbo (guitar) with Afrobeat Academy, Nicholas Addo-Nettey (percussion), who is also known as Pax Nicholas [de], with Ridimtaksi (both based in Berlin, Germany).
“Welcome to our latest ‘Between The Cracks’. You can read a bit about each album and play it on the website via the Bandcamp player. As always, please support the artists by purchasing their music. We hope you enjoy reading and listening! Immersing himself in sound all over, the new Frank Biyong album is 360 Reality Audio meets vintage old-school vibes. His latest album is very different from anything we’ve heard from Biyong before, and it never quite settles into a consistent rhythm (which is a good thing). Drawing on King Crimson and Tangerine Dream, this is a Krautrock-inspired cosmic voyage that binds electronic Afro meditation set against towering synths, a sinister wall of distortion, hard-hitting rhythms and melodic moods.”

“Amongst the recently bought music, the old favourites and new bands I’ve been checking out, October's playlist includes albums that relate to personal landmarks. 'Seven Secrets' by Fruupp represents my first ever prog gig, being the album Fruupp were touring when I went to see them play in Barrow in 1974; ‘Time Honoured Ghosts’, the second Barclay James Harvest album on the list – ‘Once Again’ being a fresh acquisition - was being toured when I first went out of Barrow to see a band, at Lancaster University; and Yes were promoting ‘Tormato’ when I went to see Yes for the first time, my first London gig, less than a month after I'd landed in the capital as a student. Of the six downloads on the playlist, Even Flow’s ‘Mediterraneo’ and Franck Biyong’s ‘Kunde’ were sent to me for my opinion. The former is well produced retro pop-metal and the latter is an incredible mix of brilliantly played psyche and chilled grooves from the creator of the Afro Electric sound”

“Franck Biyong can make a psychedelic paradise with very little. His fingers have a sorcery in their fingertips-and he’s a master around the sounds he chooses for us to hear. His new album, Kunde, brings this electronic paradise to us. Let’s see what kind of world he fabricates for us. The title track is a 10-minute epic. It shuffles through varieties of sound and dance, between instruments and ideas. It is a rewarding experience, plotting a course through some complex waters. The sound overall is an enjoyable, learning experience for someone who really delves into the realm of world music. It is a manifestation of a new kind of sound, by an excited and complex artist. It reaches layers and ideas that wouldn’t work otherwise-this erratic nature that reflects life. This is the sound you need to be listening to. The album was mixed using 360 Reality Audio immersive systems which you’ll hear throughout the album. The album was inspired by legendary Krautrock bands such as Tangerine”

“Continuing with the dissemination of new artists, yesterday we received material from this excellent musician from Cameroon, Central Africa. The disclosure here is of what will be its new release, scheduled for the 14th of this month, therefore, still - still - we cannot make it available for download. But you can follow the launch through the links that will be just below the text. Mixing elements of new age, electronic music, progressive rock and African rhythms, Franck Biyong creates an interesting atmosphere in his new work. The standout track is undoubtedly the one that gives the album its title. However, I must add that, by listening to some of his previous works, I could see that the musician's rhythmic vocabulary is quite varied, being this new release and the one from October 2021, "The Afrovision secret" the only ones that interest us at the moment.”

““When The Alliance Française said it would be MANU DIBANGO tribute, they were not kidding. This is exactly what Franck Biyong and Orchestre Lipombe Jazz pulled off in 2 whole hours. You didn’t even have to dance. Just stand and bask in this African magic. Or watch a melanin couple tear up the dance floor as if the music was made for them. The Cameroonian played that electric guitar like a rock legend. And he let the rest of his very talented band stretch out and shine too. Every musician deserved to be there last night…Just to be inspired by this new level of musicianship. Franck truly embodied his mentor and elder, even more so now that the timeless African Music Icon is no longer with us. We should really celebrate people when they’re here… Franck regularly paid tribute to MANU’s genius over the years (“Jazz & Africa” in 2011, “KI I Ye Yi” in 2012 and “Afro Bikutsi Live” in 2017), and while the past keeps speaking to the present, this new endeavor takes i”

“Another aspect of Franck’s futuristic idea of African Music is defined by artistic independence and total freedom of expression. This is a marked departure from the current strong push towards commercialization of image in place of music. Perhaps his new rock oriented project will herald crossover exposure and breakthrough on the international scene…and it may also finally alter the perception of African Music and its musicians at large.”

“A fantastic Afro-Brazilian futuristic funk anthem! The first completed version of the song then briefly went on alternative radio. They went back to the studio in the summer of 2019 and started ironing the song again from scratch. That same initial spirit and energy caught hold of the, again from the day they started and, like for Francis Bebey's New Track in 1982 or King Sunny Ade's Syncro System in 1983 who were recorded in Paris over 35 years ago, they worked relentlessly to create a balanced but experimental track showcasing roots-y sound, pop instrumentation, tight world beat drumming, song structure, jazzy horns, spacy synthesizers, choral-like vocal harmonies with call and response figurative vocals. 45RPM.”
“It's 2020 -- hard to believe. We kick off our first TerraSonic of the new month/year/decade with our traditional Blessing for the New Year by Idan Rachel, and keep it going with some classic Electric Gypsyland sounds from Kokani Orkestar vs. Gaetano Fabri. We get into a dope freshie from Balint Boldizsar, deeper into the Mazouni, and hear new sounds by Sibu, Franck Biyong, Dowdelin, SNIPER and Geylang Electric Phin Band.”
“Its 2020! We start the new year with some great music kicking it off with some Champeta from Colombia’s pico sound systems, new rework from Franck Biyong, another brilliant compilation from Strut Records in the series of Antillean Cadence classics”
“After a few other successful projects, Franck Biyong, French-Cameroonian Afrobeat composer, guitar player and singer is back on Hot Casa with a hot futuristic Afro-Brazilian club anthem. The similarities and filiations between traditional West-African drumming and Afro-Brazilian religious musical rites are many: under colonial rule African people and African slaves outwardly practiced Christianity but secretly prayed to their own God, Gods, or Ancestor spirits. So we aimed at keeping the gritty urban menacing sound and poetry of Afrobeat with the percussive mass rumble of Batucada and poignant beauty of Carioca.”
“Как и предшественник, Ibolo Ini записывался в студиях камерунских городов Яунде и Дуала, в кенийском Найроби и в Париже. Среди очень большой группы музыкантов из разных стран, участвовавших в записи, мы видим имена, знакомые уже по Afro Galactic Spaceway, но есть и новые, много новых. Lipombe Jazz feat.

“The African experience you didn’t know you needed…Franck Biyong shares ‘Afro Galactic Spaceway‘, an experimental Jazz work that intends to look into the story of culture through music, exploring beyond rhythms and chants and placing fictional characters and modern African heroes in leading positions controlling the pace and the narratives.”

"La música afro-latina-rock de Santana ha arraigado en Kenia, y este EP que el propio Biyong concibe como “Afroecléctico”, es una bella muestra de que los prestamos culturales se pueden adaptar de forma brillante. El camerunés invita al oyente a concebir su música como un estilo panafricano tras haber trabajado a medio camino entre Afrobeat con ‘Afro Bikutsi Live!’ y Jazz espiritual de los 70 con ‘Evening Prayer’."
"Franck is a master guitarist inspired by the greats of jazz and rock ‘n roll as well as having formed bands of percussionists, horn sections, bassists and backing vocalists and even written an opera. He has been hailed as a front-runner in the growth of afrobeats and even the creator of the Afroelectric sound."
“For the rear part of the top 40 albums of 2018, Radio Mukambo takes you on a trans-Atlantic ride from Europe to Latin America & back to Africa, with groove-based music going from Brazilian afro-groove, slam poetry from Trinidad & Tobago, steel funk, cumbiafrobeat, afroreggae, Cuban dancehall, mandinka afrobeat, Anatolian psychedelia, afrodelica, chichamuffin & beyond!”
“Hadithi Hadithi, Hadithi Njoo! (Story Story, Story Come!) is a common refrain that rang out in homes and classrooms all over Kenya back in the day. The refrain often signalled the beginning of a juicy folktale. Sadly, this oral tradition is dying. But a group of storytellers won't let it die and want to revive the magic of folktales. The audiobook for the same is also available and it features original music compositions by legendary Afro-Electro musician Franck Biyong and his team of over twenty musicians.”
“A process of collecting the finest, most creative stories from Africa that began in 2016 will reach its climax on Saturday when an anthology of 12 tales will be launched. “The stories celebrate generosity, hard work, humility, respect for children and those living with disability, and warn against corruption, greed, war, nepotism, and the obsession with fame and materialism,” says a statement from Positively African, the organisers of the event. The stories have also been recorded as audio books, where narrations are accompanied by music composed by legendary Afro-electro musician Franck Biyong.”
“We’re excited to feature the debut Alchemist performance by Franck Biyong Music and his new project, Hilun. This is a very special celebration of Afro-Rock-Funk Music that will delight you and feature performances by some of Nairobi’s finest instrumentalists”
“This week a lot of Africadelica with the creator of the Afrolectric sound Franck Biyong delivering the album of the week. On “Afro Bikutsi Live!” the electric guitar is king.”
“Nairobi based DJ Lasta selects contemporary music from East Africa, showing the diversity of sounds emerging from this new musical hotbed featuring Cameroonian musician Franck Biyong”
“As one of Cameroon’s best World music, Afro Jazz and creative Experimental sounds exports, the Afrolectric mastermind Franck Biyong imagines the future Pan-African sound and was recently set with two consecutive album releases, the raw Afrobeat of “Afro Bikutsi Live!” and the cosmic 70’s Spiritual Jazz of “Evening Prayer”.”
"Strangely enough, we wound up playing with more raw and bold energy than ever and this potentially lame show turned out to be one of our finest moments on (and off) stage."
"Afro Bikutsi Live! was originally released last December, but has been reissued via Paris DJ’s and features the sonically vibrant and heartwarming delights of Fai Mbuh; four and a half minutes of joyous sunshine with upbeat percussion and dazzling horns.."
“'Evening Prayer' is certainly for those of us who like to kick back to some fine dining while enjoying a night of proud top-class African jazz."”
“One of Cameroons best ‘world music‘ and Jazz exports ‘Franck Biyong’ is set with another body of work he calls ‘Evening Prayer’. Taking a slight detour from his usual Afrobeats focused and traditional sounds, the France based and world touring act is giving the jazzy effect needed for those evenings of meditation.”
"With a Juju classic from Sunny Ade, and electro synth cover of Fela Kuti’s 'Expnsive Shit' by sUb-modU, and the Franck Biyong's exceptional new version of 'Shuffering and Shmiling' recorded live."
“Also tracks from Nigeria’s juju-meets-highlife master Dr Orlando Owoh, Sonny Okusuns & Ozzidi exploring the Dance of the Elephants, ex Africa 70 guitarist Ogehene Kologbo, and Cameroun guitarist Franck Biyong tightens up Fela’s Shuffering and Shmiling”
"Suivant les influences qu’il cultive depuis la fondation de l’Afrolectric Orchestra, Franck Biyong mêle le jazz et l’Afrique, n’est jamais loin non plus ni du funk ni de l’afrobeat, et invoque autant Manu Dibango que Fela."
“Franck Biyong est un musicien, compositeur et chanteur camerounais, inventeur du son "Afrolectric" fusionnant Afrobeat, Electro-Funk et Jazz d'Avant-garde.”
“Franck Biyong is a Cameroonian musician, composer and singer, creator of the "Afrolectric" sound fusing Afrobeat, Electro-Funk and Avant-garde Jazz. Here are 4 tunes co-produced with Paris DJs' main man Grant Phabao, extracted from the "Ki I Ye Yi" album they released together in 2012. Driven by a heavyweight spatial sound, this music is the missing link between the bold roughness of Fela Kuti and the melodic sophistication of Manu Dibango.”
“As African music began to gain more and more popularity in the west, record company owners, producers and enthusiasts tried and failed to create a fusion between Western and African styles in a dubious concept called “world music”.”
“‘Liyomba Church’ opens with high-energy screeches and thumps that won’t let you go. It is a fervent and unabashed call to dance. It is also the first single off Cameroonian creative ‘Franck Biyong’s’ upcoming 11th album, “Moonwatching 2”.”
"Unfortunately for us, world music came along a ruined all of that by focusing mostly on the fusion of African sounds with the technological advancement of the day (which really wasn’t the cleverest idea looking back) or the stereotypical aspects that could be promoted and pushed forward in African music, meaning: African Music = Dance…which is definitely not true."
“Franck Biyong – Moon Watching Cameroonian guitarist and founder of the Afrolectric sound, Franck Biyong explores electronica and dubstep in new album “Moon Watching”. The alternative rock album is packed with fascinating electronic sounds as he showcases his phenomenal guitar skills. Lead single “End of the Road”explores the futuristic theme that flows throughout the album. Listen: iTunes // Deezer // Spinlet”
“We’re proud to announce the signing of Cameroonian jazz/rock legend and creator of the Afrolectric sound, Franck Biyong! Born to Cameroonian parents, Franck grew up in Nigeria, Ivory Coast and the UK where he was able to integrate the cultures around him into his music, giving him a uniqueness never seen before. Once a major proponent of afrobeat, Franck’s passion for many styles of music has allowed him to adapt to different genres and sounds. Now delving into the world of electronic rock with a definitive African flavour, Franck’s spectacular electric guitar riffs and modern sound mean he’s certainly one to keep an eye on! Franck will be releasing his long anticipated single, Liyomba, on the 23rd March. The songs fast-paced guitar and drum loops display that classic Afrolectric vibe he has been working to perfect throughout his career. Over the years, Franck has released a number of successful albums and his upcoming 10th album, Moonwatching will be released later this ”
“Calling all intergalactic Afro-funk cosmonauts and tropical grooves aficionados !! After exploring GOODNESS, FIRE, WARRIOR and ELECTRIC themes, Paris DJs felt it was time to concentrate their research on the UNITY concept, on the global cultural unity that is expressed through all strands of groovy, funky, psychedelic and moving afrofunk, afrobeat, ethio-jazz, highlife, afrojazz, afrosoul, Carribean Funk and other Tropical Grooves to be found on this planet today. This new compilation in the 'Tropical Grooves & Afrofunk International series' is called 'A HOUSE DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF CANNOT STAND'. This unity theme is one that came out of nearly every discussion with the musicians from the worldwide 'afro scene'. Even if it might seem a bit utopic, it's something that is becoming a reality from Paris DJs' viewpoint - you wouldn't believe how much the most sincere musicians, bands, labels, DJs, record collectors and stores are connected throughout the world…”
“Following the October 2012 release of his latest outstanding "KI I YE YI" album here's yet another straight-in-your face Afrobeat recording by Cameroonian musician Franck Biyong and his Afrolectric Orkestra, a rousing cover version of Fela Kuti's timeless classic "I.T.T" (International Thief Thief) originally released in 1980. Live recordings rarely capture a tenth of the excitement in the room, but this extra lo-fi soundboard recorded slice of Afrobeat roller coaster preserves all the guts and sheer power of a vintage night in a small but famous Paris club (La Machine du Moulin Rouge) where Biyong and his cohort of Cameroonian "Têtes Brulêes" (Burnt Heads) played an early morning dynamic set for a tribute party to the "Abami Eda" himself (the weird one in Yoruba language), the Black President and music genius, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Biyong and his Afrolectric Orkestra's vibrant interpretation of this "anthem of the African slums" showcases a driving syncopation and furious rhythms.”
“21.12.2012 (Truth or Lies?)" is a striking summation and reflection of Franck Biyong's singular gifts and versatile musicianship. Constructed out of his usual collage of studio and live elements, this album shows a more relaxed side to another wise intense and complex production, promoting not just melodies but stretched out solos and music for music's sake. The record reflects the rapidly changing and tormented modern times and pinballs between classy Afro jams, psychedelic ambient sounds, avant jazz, prowling beats and blissful weeping guitar solos. Here Biyong exploits the timbral possibilities of the various woodwind instruments, pattering percussion and peals of keyboards. There is definitely more space on this album than ever before on Franck's previous recordings, a sparse but heavy mood that isn't just Afro Jazz or experimental music influenced either: The ever changing and fertile arrangement ideas once again prove that Biyong's unusual musical imagination in highly attuned.”
"Dis Is Good For You - Tropical Grooves and Afrofunk International" is the first compilation coming out on the newly-launched Paris DJs label, gathering old cats and newcomers from the worldwide Afro/Tropical scene. Dwelving into the minds and hard drives of their international network of artists and producers for a whole month, Paris DJs have carefully selected 13 tracks of current, modern, 21st century Afrofunk, Afrobeat, Ethio-Jazz, Reggae and Soul, and even mixed most of those from separate parts themselves, raising the production level to their high quality standards of warm, heavy sound. Paris DJs' experience through the digital age has been one of discoveries and enthousiasm, meeting a lot of musicians and people, exploring many music trends through numerous collaborative recordings. Many seeds have been planted, with albums from Franck Biyong & The Diamane Bantu Messengers, Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra, The Jays, The Silvertones scheduled for the coming months.
“Franck Biyong is a Cameroonian musician, composer and singer, creator of the Afrolectric sound fusing Afrobeat, Electro-Funk, Avant-garde Jazz and rock sounds. The band Massak that Franck had formed in 1997, and toured with extensively for at least a decade, ended shortly after the release of the "Visions of Kamerun" album in 2010 ."I knew something in the music had to change", says Franck about the new directions showcased in this new album, undoubtedly the best endeavor of his already prolific catalog. Franck Biyong's 9th album "Ki I Ye Yi" ("The one who doesn't know knows" in Basaa language), is a rare treat in the current Afro revival, blending the lost big band Central Africa tradition of the church choirs, national orchestras or military bands, with the urban 70s funk & afrobeat sound of the Paris Djs production powerhouse. You'll hear in this album a true anthology of Central Africa's poly rhythms and melodies blessed with a solid and sophisticated production.”
“In 2010, Djouls set up with Paris-based producers Doctor L, Franck Biyong and Grant Phabao the highly collectable Colored-Inc. label. Together they released 16 albums in just one year, available digitally for only 12 months and on very limited CD pressings with handmade packaging. Franck Biyong and Grant Phabao started working together on some Afrofunk productions. Djouls was at the time a partner of the Superfly Records store in Paris, which is just the number one vinyl record store worldwide for all things Afro, so recording new Afro music was the logical way to go… One of the first track issued from those sessions was the dancefloor stormer Ogun from the Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra featuring Franck Biyong on bass, with Nicolas Baudino (from Franck's Massak band) and Zakari Frantz (from The Souljazz Orchestra) respectively on tenor and alto sax. With heavy heavy Afrofunk breaks and horns slabs, Ogun has already been ravaging the clubbers heads & feets every time it”
“Playlisted all summer long on Radio Nova, Fe Bain, the first single extracted from Franck Biyong's forthcoming 8th album Ki I Ye Yi ("The one who doesn't know knows" in Basaa language), is a rare treat in the current Afro revival, swirling Jazz chops on a unique and mesmerizing Central African groove, with deep vocals from Désiré Nkouandou Njopam. Fe Bain, also know as "Fai Mbu", is a frantic cover of a track produced by Manu Dibango for great Cameroon singer & trombonist Francis Ndom, for the 1982 Fleurs Musicales du Cameroon compilation. You'll hear in Fe Bain a true anthology of rhythms and melodies whose source is none other than the forest of central Africa (the Bamenda ethnic group), and especially a large range of the new trends of the modern African sound, presenting the typical eclecticism of music from this country that other Africans rightfully name “Africa in miniature”.”
“The trademark eclectic music of artist Franck Biyong is once again carefully represented in this impressionist album. These new recordings were essentially conceived as an 'independent movie soundtrack' with a soft touch of progressive jazz arrangements in the background. The overall sound here seems subtler, looser and brighter. This spacey music reaches another level of sophistication. “I felt we needed to consider things differently and hopefully we wound up with this strange sound. I also made room for the guitar...” And the bottom-heavy music remains accessible. As more and more musicians emerge here and there with Africa in mind, Biyong will be considered as one of the true pioneers brilliantly pushing the Afro-Jazz fusion movement forward.”
“ Recorded in Yaoundé, Cameroon, this brand new single by Franck Biyong & Massak is an honorary tribute to the great leaders of the African independences 50 years ago. On the musical point of view this is Franck Biyong's long awaited "back to the roots" recording after years of musical search and explorations! Definitely one of the finest 21st century roots Afrobeat tracks out there these days, with great horn polyphony, complex polyrhythm and Franck's confident vocals and message, reminding you there still is a "weapon of the future"... Taken from the forthcoming LP Visions Of Kamerun - out this summer on our brand new label Colored-Inc. ”
“Recorded in Cameroon, this Afrolectric 9-tracker - with 9 spoken interludes of some selected elders' wisdom - tells the history and the links of a Southern country with Europe, with an interrogative and perplexed glance over the present state of things. Mixed by Grant Phabao in Paris, Visions Of Kamerun gathers African harmonies, delicate traditional percussions, subtle afro-jazz drummings, delicious minimal guitar riffs, the tropically powerful Massak horn section, with soulful vocals from Franck Biyong, Sandra NKaké and Gladys Gambie. Defining a salutary musical movement called New African Jazz, with a solid, deeply sincere emotional core, the album balances equally between Jazz exploration, rhythmic vivacity, Soul depth and cultural immersion. ”
“Recorded with a stunning crew of Afro-American artists comprising poets, singers, deejays and MC's, this brand new release of Cameroonian musician Franck Biyong focuses on the sound continuum between mother Africa and her daughter called Jazz. 'The fact we performed mostly cover songs on this record, up to real jazz standards offered me the opportunity to stretch out more and essentially create a new rhythm process' says Biyong 'to make it more circular, more African flavored. Then I asked them to throw some blues on it'. These highly original renditions of great songs (Charlie Parker, James Brown, Sun Ra, Manu Dibango, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman etc…) create another kind of Good Book where the African ancestral rhythm finally encounters the spoken word narrative tradition. This album is for sure an unpredictable departure from Franck Biyong's former recording, but definitely a giant step towards a new barrier crossing style of music.”
