Gerry White
Rock • Chesapeake, VA
Gerry has been writing music ever since he was a kid of about 11 or 12. It was truly is first artistic passion. He initially began writing rock songs for a 3-4 piece band. While in junior high, he completed about 15 pieces. He first recored some of these tracks on one of his albums, Mirror.
Gerry was in the band at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake Virginia where he still lives today. The trumpet was his first formal instrument on which he learned how to read music from his father and in the school band. Toward the end of junior high, he earned admission into The Virginia Governor’s Magnet School for the Arts for guitar, piano, and music composition. It was there between his time at Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University that his training in classical, jazz, and formal composition began. He wrote several classical pieces for the guitar and piano and some chamber and orchestral arrangements as well. While there, he studied with Paul Renz, Sam Dorsey, Dr. Adolphus Hailstork, Bill Clemmons, and many other excellent professors. Gerry enjoyed all that magnet school had to offer, and this cemented his decision to continue studying at Old Dominion University for his both his undergraduate and graduate work.
Gerry now teaches guitar, piano, and theory privately. He is also a professor at ECPI University.
Gerry has recorded several solo albums and has worked with other local musicians in the studio as well. Different genres he recorded include rock, classical, and even spoken word. His latest endeavor is a new rock band named Dead Monkey. His most recent album is called Naked Truth. This is a primarily acoustic album and contains pieces written over about the last 4-5 years.
