Singer Songwriter • Philadelphia, PA
Hal Aaron Cohen is a singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist - born and raised in a musical environment inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. His father literally sat Hal on his knee one evening after dinner and showed him a few chords on the old Gretch. Hal pretty much ran with it on his own after that. In 1977, Cohen moved to Santa Monica, CA where he developed much of his performing chops as a singing waiter at a popular eatery calledThe Great American Food and Beverage Company. Fellow singing servers included Ricki Lee Jones, Katie Sagal, the late Eric Lowen (Lowen and Navarro) and Peter Tork, among others. During those years in L.A., Hal performed at (and hosted) many open mics and showcases, playing covers and original songs in bands and as a solo acoustic act. Venues where he showcased include the infamous Palamino in North Hollywood, The Central (now the Viper Room), Genghis Cohen, and the world famous Troubadour. He's shared the stage with John Andrew Parks, Robert Morgan Fisher, Lisa Nemzo, Bob Malone (keyboardist for John Fogarty, Severin Brown, James Hurley, Andy Kahan of the Turtles,Jay Leslie of the Tokens and many others. Hal Aaron's style is influenced by an eclectic array of songwriters including Lennon/McCartney, John B. Sebastian, Billy, Joel, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Sir Elton John, Peter Townshend, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Cliff, and some humor injected by Al Yankovic and Allan Sherman. He's also written lyrics and music for three plays and in 1998, Hal was nominated by the Valley Theater League to receive the Artistic Director Achievement Award for "Girls Night Out" by Lynn A. Henderson. Hal received rave reviews for the songs he penned for "Bike Crash Blues" by Don Jarmin. Upon his father's passing from Parkinson's Disease in 2004, Hal Cohen returned to Philadelphia where he's currently on a quest to reinvent himself. His bucket lsit includes recording a new CD and performing house concerts around the tri-state area.
