I have three CD's on the go at the moment. Two are a chordless Quintet CD's - Newell Waltz and the second. Compression. These CD's are all of original compositions, inspired from a desire to get some of my music recorded and documented after 25 years of being a sideman in a rhythm section (not that this CD has changed my circumstances much).I had always dabbled with composition and decided to get some material recorded and released.
My early music training in Brass Bands finally surfaced in my day to day existence in the 90's when I bought a Sousaphone and began to explore the 'doubling' scenario of playing both string bass and brass bass.It was an obvious thing to do and soon led to Blow it out ya Brass Band - and 5 or 6 piece brass band which is a lot of fun. The second CD is our latest release. There is an earlier CD from the 90's, but this latest is called 'Sugarfinger' and features all the members of the quintet as well as other Melbourne players like Eugene Ball, Dean Hilson, Carlo Barbero, Paul Coyle, Dai Jones, and Hugh Harvey on drums. We play Hymns, Jazz standards , New Orleans Brass band funk and the title track is a traditional calypso tune I heard from the great New Orleans Tuba player Bob Stewart . The CD is available at our gigs and in Melbourne CBD at Basement Discs.
