JOYCE ALDRICH LANDS RADIO PLAY IN CANADA, U.S. ,SPAIN, FRANCE, WALES AND CZECH REPUBLIC
TORONTO, ONT. JANUARY, 2015 — How did jazz singer-songwriter Joyce Aldrich get to work with top UK producer Chris Birkett on her sophomore album, My Heart & Soul – Latin…Jazz? She simply reached out to him via social networking business site LinkedIn.
Birkett, who produced Sinead O’Connor’s I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got and Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Juno Award-winning Running for the Drum, in addition to working with Bob Geldof, Steve Earle & The Pogues, Talking Heads and The Proclaimers, responded with “Maybe we can do an album together?” Soon, that’s what happened.
Recording in Toronto, where Birkett now has a studio, the album will be pushed in Canada in 2015 after last year’s soft release earned international attention. It has already received radio play in the U.S., Spain, France, Wales, and Czech Republic.
In Canada, CBC has played “This Is For The Birds,” about an 80-year-old retired nurse who feeds the birds and squirrels near Joyce’s work and JAZZ-FM gravitated towards the lead track, a song she wrote three weeks after meeting the person with whom she’d be in an 11-year relationship.
Of the 10 songs on My Heart & Soul – Latin…Jazz (distributed by Dynasty Records), Joyce wrote six of them, with one co-write with Chris Birkett (“Walking In The Light”). As the title of the album implies, she focuses on lyrics from her heart (relationships) and from her soul (spiritual) in a mixed-genre style that spans Latin to jazz.
“I wasn’t going to be untrue to my music,” Joyce says. “When you create artwork, it might be a sculpture; it might be a mixed-media piece, it may be oil; it’s whatever you need to use to make it happen and that’s the same with the music I write. It may be a blues; it may be a funk; it may be jazz; it may be gospel; it may be Latin, whatever feels right.”
The three cover songs on the album are “In A Long White Room”, “Veinte Años” and "Bésame Mucho”.
“They are love songs that move my story along and how I felt because I was married for almost 20 years. That’s ‘Veinte Años’ and how love dies when you leave and then ‘Bésame Mucho,’ which is one of the most beautiful love songs in the world, and then ‘In A Long White Room’ reminded me of my relationship with some of the men I’ve had in my life.”
