Mean Gene Band alias MGB
Based out of Pismo Beach, CA, MGB is best described as a rocking power trio, wide variety ROCK band, pooling polished Acoustic to Electra-fried renditions of well known artists through the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000+ . Covering everything from Alternative, Blues, Contemporary, Country, Disco, Funk, Progressive, hues of Metal, R&B, Rock and beyond. They have a great feel for delivering what any audience wants to hear. A group of seasoned pro players that have graced the stage opening for many well known artists such as; Robin Trower, Blue Oyster Cult, Quiet Riot, Thin Lizzy as well as sharing the stage performing with legendary guitar icon “Ronnie Montrose” and performing in his Memorial Tribute Concert 4/27/2012.
The band formed in 2002 under the name of “Mean Gene and the Portable Jon's”, given 3 Jon's in the band. As years passed and “Jon's” entered or exited the band “Gene” remained the consistent player and the name changed in 2009 to “MGB” Mean Gene Band. We have dubbed the evolution as“UQM” a “University of Quality Musicians” meaning the band has always been well known and respected for having great players/singers so the audience always gets an excelled musical experience.
Catering to the audience, entertaining to all age groups, MGB can tailor a show to that of the majority. The perfect band for most any event Fundraisers, Bike Runs, Weddings, Birthdays, Festivals, Wineries, City to Corporate events, to packing that dance floor for a very memorable night and always asked for return shows.
Gene Baker – Guitar/Lead Vocals
Founder and driving force behind the MGB motorcade. Dubbed “Mean Gene” in his teens for his energy fueled rippin guitar playing coupled with a strong vocal approach, all which contradict his modest/humble off stage persona. “86” Musicians Institute of Technology graduate, world renown as the designer/luthier of “b3” custom guitars via their company “Premier Builders Guild” having worked for both Gibson and Fender Custom Shops. 1990 Author of “Mean Gene's Insane Lead Guitar” instruction DVD/manual with multiple Guitar Competition titles under his belt. Kelly Atwell – Lead Vocals
Big things often come in small packages and Kelly is a true performer and front man from the word GO. A virtual vocal chameleon adapting to most any style from soft and nice to lungs flame throwing screams born and raised on pure rock. Well known for his iconic role in High Voltage an AC/DC Tribute as well as having shared the stage with legendary Ronnie Montrose for multiple shows in 2011. Kelly's versatility expands MGB into anywhere they wish to go.
Brian Monzel – Drums/Vocals
Brian's passion for the drums started at age 11. Inspired by watching Tommy Lee from Motley Crue he has since made a career at the instrument. He has studied with Darrell Voss at The Cuesta Jazz program and has shared the stage with such acts as Hoobastank and Godsmack. Currently you can find Brian teaching eager beginners how to play the drums as Director of Drumset studies at The Drum Circuit.
Johnny Punches – Bass/Vocals
