TOTHAS returns on Tuesday 12th February 2019 a strong line-up of performers across different genres:-
Wob (http://www.wobmusic.com) makes his 6th TOTHAS appearance. Wob first played TOTHAS in 2012 and most recently, 2 years ago. Last time he closed the evening in his customary completely unplugged fashion. Our anonymous gig reviewer said "Spot on as always and as he gets older the more energy he seems to muster- one of the greats". Wob bashed out a career encompassing list featuring The Hardest Part, Friends In The Night [amazing highlight and nicely dedicated to his former label boss Phil in the audience], Scab-Knee Girl, Roman Holiday, Ordinary Man [first time we had a ukulele at TOTHAS], On The Tiles, a song about skateboarding and another about hope...amongst others. Wob has since moved further afield, but we are really pleased that he will trek over to play to us one last time. Post-punk folk songwriter Wob Williams has been literally pummeling the stage since the start of the 1990's. Travelling extensively with a trusty acoustic guitar, venues all over England, gaining ecstatic audience reactions from crowds more used to punk rock than acoustic music. Wob started his musical life in legendary folk-punk band Blyth Power before spreading his wings and releasing his debut solo CD "I Can't Stay Long" (featuring the amazing Sometimes) in 1995, the start of an impressive body of work which feature many a highlight. This was followed the following year by "Friends In The Night" (feat.Poison Pen), "Straight On Till Morning" 1998 (ft Hopeless), "Gather" 1999 (ft Unnamed), "Silverleaf" 2001 (ft Green), "With One Step" 2003 (ft Ragdoll), "A Month Of Sundays" 2006 (ft All For A Good Cause), "Trying To Catch The Rain" 2009 (ft Souvenir), "Spitfire Bridge" 2011 (ft Ordinary Man) and "Time And Tide" 2015 (ft Spitfire Bridge). Wob has established himself as a dynamic performer, with songs & vocals that are both high-energy & highly melodic. This path has led him to festivals, rock venues, folk clubs and a host of weird and wonderful places in Britain, Europe, Australia and the US. Wob usually plays solo, filling the room with his acoustic guitar, harmonica and powerful voice. More recently he has added a ukulele to his repertoire. Wob is equally adapt at entertaining a room of kids these days as he is adults, but it's not all "Dad Punk", he possesses the amazing ability to split your sides with one song and bring a tear to your eye with the next. Last year Wob took a rare trip down memory lane, celebrating 20 years since his "Straight On Till Morning". Here's a rocking clip from that tour...
Boycey will play a short set comprising their recently released "Candy Floss EP" (https://boysteroussounds.bandcamp.com/album/boycey-candy-floss-e-p). I ma very excited about this as this will bring the original line-up of the band together in one place for the very first time! Moykal O'Bui , that's me, is the main singer songwriter in the band. I first used this monikor in 2002 and 2005 for the more electric band sounding projects that I worked on. However, it wasn't until after 2004 when I first played in a rehearsal studio with my brother-in-law drummer Herve that I started to write songs for a full-band line-up which was subsequently joined by Pat Rowles (bass and backing vocals) and Mark Thorne (keyboards and backing vocals), that things fully took shape. Boycey's debut album "Life Leaks A Hole" was launched at the very first TOTHAS in 2010. With Herve based in France initially and more recently the Marquesas Islands, Colin Mutimer kindly stepped in on drums for this gig. The band continued as a trio and released "The Contender E.P." later that same year, "Beginnings & Endings" in 2011 and "Last Generation" in 2014 before the latest release. Here is a live rehearsal for one of the songs we will be playing on the night...
Ger Lane (https://gerlane.com/home), after more than 3 years, returns to TOTHAS for a third time. Last time he appeared, near the end of 2015, he made a triumphant return. Barbara Barz demonstrated why she is the most sought after violinist on the London acoustic circuit with her incisive and inspired playing. Ger built towards the set end by switching to electric guitar with Dan Gigson and Zane Scott joining in on bass and drums respectively. "Living On My Nerves" was a highlight for me. Ger is an accomplished live performer, singer and songwriter originally from Limerick, Ireland and now based in London. Ger has been building himself a reputation on the London acoustic circuit since releasing his debut single Straightforward Love Song was released in 2012. Known to be a bit of a perfectionist, Ger has been experimenting with different sounds and line-ups in the studio and released the first fruits of this A Much Deeper Sigh last year. I am so glad that I have managed to coax Ger back to TOTHAS for one final time and looking forward to hearing what he has been getting up to. He will play solo. Expect something cosmic! Here is Ger's latest single
I am very excited to announce that fine acoustic duo The Gillies (https://www.musicglue.com/thegillies/about) will be making their TOTHAS debut. The Gillies are an Americana influenced acoustic alternative folk duo, writing haunting songs of love, loss and twists of fate, the complications of tangled relationships. Susan Turner (vocals, tenor guitar), and Mark (Gilly) Evans (guitar, dobro) live in South East London. Their songs have influences of English,Celtic and American folk traditions. “Our songs seem to have a lull of sadness attached to them, the darkness of lonely bedsits and street lit nights, these memories haunt our songwriting, always going back to our Norfolk roots.” They capture the sounds of bleak landscapes. Their guitars create intricate picking patterns that fall, conflict and harmonize. “We have really worked on how the two guitars work together acoustically” This is a crucial element of the sound that they create, the cold brightness and lonesome feel of Susan’s Harmony tenor guitar, a kind of sadness in the strings contrasting with the dark, sweet-sound of Gilly’s Gibson. Susan’s Emmylou-tinged vocals lay above the intertwining picked guitars, creating understated melodies which pull you into the songs. In 2016 they finished their debut mini-album ‘Worries Fold Up Their Wings’ and played on Doug Welch BBC Radio Kent and West Norfolk Radio. In March 2016 they took part in a song challenge for Eltham Arts festival and their ‘Winter Song’ was included on their CD. I first encountered The Gillies at one of Kath Tait's Gigaholics gigs and was really impressed by the way they carry a tune and a tale so gracefully with their understated vocals and guitar interplay, building powerfully as the songs progress. They have just released their "No Hiding Place" mini-album but are already writing new material as this recent evidence demonstrates...
Winston Skerritt (https://www.facebook.com/Winston-Skerritt-Music-500343586723729/) returns to TOTHAS for a third time. Winston last played two years ago when our anonymous gig reviewer commented "With a Hendrix like vocal delivery and a Riche Havens like guitar style it was very refreshing." Winston's played Hocus Pocus, Bogus, Ops The Water, Peaceful Man, Cider Man and Wolves [the retuning was well worth the wait!]. A regular on the south London acoustic singer-songwriting circuit Winston couples intricate strummed rhythms with choice lyrics delivered with a soulful space that bring to mind a reflective aforementioned Jimi Hendri. Winston is forging a path and developing a sound that is at once familiar but ultimately his own. Winston plays acoustic guitar and sings beautifully. Here is a more recent example of this...
