The Covert Operation
Pop • Geneva, OH
"They call it swerve rock, and it's not a tribute to '90s shoe-gazing act Swervedriver. Instead, local outfit The Covert Operation explores this rock sound on its debut full-length effort, "Debut De La Fin . . ."
"It's like swerving from one genre to another," said frontman Rob Covert (vocals, guitar), a 1992 Geneva High School graduate. "It all flows together, it's not awkward and very pleasing to the ear."
The backing band is rounded out by Bob A. Massena (drums), Jim Ales (bass, vocals), John Luttrell (keys) and Josh Theilan (guitar, vocals, percussion). Because of its melting pot sound, the quintet has garnered comparisons to everyone from The Beatles and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd to the Foo Fighters.
Such is the case with new tracks like the power-pop "Love Infected" and the Hank III-meets-Rob Zombie psychobilly song "Wrong Kinda Woman."
It appears as though the modus operandi for the Covert Operation is one surprise after another on stage or, well, in front of the stage. "We'll do some theatrics or something different," Covert said. "We recently brought out a cornhole board with our logo on it and had people playing cornhole to win free merchandise. That's part of us. Wherever we go, we like to say the party follows because we just don't stand up there and play a bunch of songs. We have an event, we have a party."
