the maharajah commission
Rock • Subang Jaya, MY
We started out in 1999, consisting from a small-ish extended group of college friends. Realising, that we enjoyed each other's company and that musically we brought something different to the table, we came up with this band over a cuppa tea.
The name of the band essentially reflects our cynicism that the more things change the more they stay the same, be it music or the state of our lives. In a Malaysian context, seeing that the country had colonialist past which subscribed to the British Imperial "divide and rule" mantra, things have hardly changed in modern Malaysia. we still see things by division and not commonalties or even believe in unity in diversity.
Maybe we are expecting too much. This frustration is also tempered by our hope, and is reflected in our music. It is also our intention that our music challenges you or possibly offends you. change may be a bitch, but she's also a welcomed breath of fresh air.
It was sad that 2 of our original members (alex lam and fang han) were not able to join us in our latest misadventures, but their spirit of industriousness and invention remains with us and we look forward to meeting up with them when our paths cross again.
We also welcome our newest member, Ammar Khairi on drums and percussion. Once an academic student of Azmyl's, he has helped sparked a new way of doing business for us and we are thankful. Ever the hardworking and reflective soul, we look forward to some interesting times ahead.
