Old 300
Americana • Austin, TX
Singer-songwriter and Jasper, TX, native Russell Bisbey performs with his group, The Old 300. Bisbey, who now lives in San Marcos, is the lead singer and rhythm guitar player for The Old 300, as well as the group's primary songwriter. The other members of the band are drummer/percussionist Javier “Javi” Aguilar, lead guitarist/saxophonist/vocalist Lyle Mauricio, and bassist/vocalist James “Moose” Duvall. Bisbey got his start as a musical performer with the band South 96, which debuted at the Kirbyville, TX Magnolia Festival in 2007. He launched his solo career later that year, singing and playing guitar at Wings Over Jasper, the former restaurant and club on Highway 96 north of Jasper at the current location of Doug’s Bar & Grill. Shortly after moving to San Marcos to attend Texas State University, Bisbey began performing his original songs at Cheatham Street Warehouse, a venerable institution that has been the home of Texas Hill Country music for over forty years, and where such stars as George Strait, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Todd Snider and Randy Rogers started their careers. During this time, Bisbey lived and performed with childhood friend and musical contemporary Eric Middleton (of Midnight River Choir). In 2009 Bisbey co-founded Southside Union, a Texas Country music group that garnered some acclaim in the Central Texas region for the songwriting talents of Bisbey and bassist/vocalist Cameron Joyner. Lead guitarist Dustin Schaefer would later go on to play with Aaron Einhouse and Micky & The Motorcars. In 2010 the group released a CD of original songs entitled Upland Drive EP, including Russell’s "Always Gonna Leave", which still receives occasional airplay on country music stations in the Southeast Texas radio market. Bisbey has performed at a number of Central Texas venues in addition to Cheatham Street Warehouse including the Kerrville Folk Festival; Stubb’s BBQ, Hill’s Cafe and the Saxon Pub in Austin; Schroeder Hall in Goliad; and the Phoenix Saloon and River Road Icehouse in New Braunfels. Along the way Bisbey has appeared on the same bill with the likes of Walt Wilkins, Micky & the Motorcars, Casey Donahew, Roger Creager, Turnpike Troubadours, James McMurtry, Band of Heathens, Kyle Park, Honeybrowne, Rich O'Toole, Gary P. Nunn, Whiskey Myers, Midnight River Choir, Aaron Stephens, Hill Country Gentlemen, Bart Crow, Wade Bowen and Adam Hood, among others. He also spent a year as the lead guitarist and harmony vocalist for the San Marcos, TX band Pawn Shop Gold, fronted by his good friend and fellow singer-songwriter, Jason Bednorz. In 2012, Bisbey was honored by his selection to represent Texas State University as one of seven state-wide finalists in the annual Kerrville Folk Festival University Songwriter Contest. Since 2011 Bisbey has fronted The Old 300, which plays Americana/alternative country music, influenced by such groups as Cross Canadian Ragweed, Old 97's and Ryan Adams.
