The TROUBLES
Americana • Portland, ME
The Troubles are power pop/classic rock personified. Semi-legendary in their home state of Maine, the band consists of passionate students of rock & roll who have spent decades getting it just right. The band was formed in 1993 during a recording session for another group produced by guitarist/singer Joe Brien, one of Maine’s most revered musicians. While complimenting drummer Rusty Gates on his press roll technique, Brien inquired if he would be interested in record a few Brien originals. The reply was “absolutely.”To cement their blooming partnership, Brien and Gates stayed behind after the session and recorded a version of the 1960s’ folk-rock classic “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire. The song was sent to local radio stations and became an instant hit, and several months later, received high praise from McGuire himself. Fired up, the band recorded and released two acclaimed albums - 1999’s “It’s About Time” and 2001’s “Here We Go Again” - full of melodic, harmony-drenched guitar that encompassed the best elements of everyone from The Beatles and Big Star to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and The Byrds. The Troubles remained active, performing across New England through 2005 – including a number of high profile shows such as a 2001 9/11 benefit, the 2003 Inaugural Ball for Maine's newly elected Governor John Baldacci, and even a 2004 John Kerry fundraiser with Hillary Rodham Clinton in the crowd!Fast forward to November 2011After more than a 10 year recording hiatus, Brien and Gates returned to their home studio this year to begin the demo process for a collection of new songs. The reconstituted Troubles are currently completing production on Briens "Back in the Light," with immediate plans for a video with the hopes of generating enough YouTube hits to land them a spot on the Ellen Show. With members ranging in age from 33 to 73, it’s clear that time will not stop The Troubles, and they will never stop playing their heartwarming brand of feel good , good-time rock & roll.
