About THEY Previously, the members of THEY were making music in bands like Ada Kaleh, The Red Notes, Thee Romantics, die basis., Memories Fade Away, The Buster Keaton Explosion, Chris Void & The Grave Robbers From Outer Space, Norman Bates, Rhüdiger Haffetz Quintett, The Dudes, Obazda, The Final Curtain, Rip van Winkle or Kapelle Koralle. All of these bands - with few exceptions - left their traces mainly in and around Munich (Germany) and only few of them still exist. The musical styles of these bands might have been called Fusion, Crossover, Jazz, Punk, Pop, Indie and Post-Rock. Bands in which the musicians of THEY repeatedly met, but usually went ahead for the next project. But THEY never really lost contact, even after up to 20 years of not having seen each other... THEY was established in the winter of 2011. Just because it seemed a good idea. And their music actually sounds like that! It severely rocks! The individual 'hand writing' of the band is obvious, as are the roots of its sounds, dating back to the 60s and 70s. So you might well recognize the influence of Jimi Hendrix, the double-leadlines of Wishbone Ash or Thin Lizzy and a pinch of the early King Crimson's prog. Additionally, the complex rhythm patterns and the lyrical harmonies of Tortoise or The Sea And Cake as well as the strong grooves of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the weird and brute elements of Primus or Motorpsycho and the dark freestyle blues of Chris Whitley or the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion are some of the most important guides. The music of THEY is powerful, a bit blue, now and then spiced with fairly unexpected elements, intense and authentic. But THEY prefer making music, rather than talking about it. Consequently, the début album 'A Night At The Movies' represents a straight self-made production. All 14 songs were recorded live during a single, three-day session in the former projection room of the abandoned cinema 'Union Kino-Center' in Memmingen (Germany). Except for the vocals, only very few overdubs were added later. Thus, the album documents the bands live-energy, which is exactly what THEY want: to capture the moment, right here and right now! Alles Bands, die ihre Spuren in München und darüber hinaus hinterlassen haben und die teilweise noch aktiv sind. Bands zwischen Fusion, Crossover, Jazz, Punk, Pop, Indie und Postrock. Bands in denen sich die einzelnen Musiker von THEY immer wieder mal begegnet sind, um schließlich zum nächsten Projekt weiter zu ziehen. Aber man hat sich auch nie ganz aus den Augen verloren, selbst wenn man sich bis zu 20 Jahre lang nicht mehr gesehen hatte … Seit dem Winter 2011 gibt es THEY. Aus einer gemeinsamen Laune heraus, einfach weil es nach einer guten Idee klang. Und es klingt nicht nur nach einer guten Idee, es klingt tatsächlich gut! Es rockt. Und das teilweise heftig. Aber eben auch sehr individuell. Die Fundamente des THEY-Sounds wurden in den 60ern und 70ern gelegt. Jimi Hendrix, die Double-Leadlines von Wishbone Ash oder Thin Lizzy und eine Prise Prog á la den frühen King Crimson klingen da durch. Aber auch die verschachtelten Rhythmus-Patterns und die lyrischen Harmonien von Tortoise oder The Sea And Cake. Und die fetten Grooves der Red Hot Chili Peppers, das schräg Brachiale von Primus oder Motorpsycho und der düstere Freestyle Blues von Chris Whitley oder der Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Die Musik von THEY ist kraftvoll, ein bisschen melancholisch, immer wieder überraschend, intensiv und authentisch. Aber THEY diskutieren nicht gerne über Musik, sie machen lieber. Und so wurde auch das erste Album entsprechend straight und unkompliziert und in absoluter Eigenregie produziert. Alle 14 Songs wurden live während einer einzigen, dreitägigen Session im stillgelegten Union Kino-Center in Memmingen aufgenommen. Nur der Gesang und einige wenige Kleinigkeiten wurden nachträglich als Overdubs hinzugefügt. „A Night At The Movies“ ist also eine Momentaufnahme – perfekt sind ohnehin immer nur die Anderen. Und genau darum geht es: Um den Moment, um die Energie des Hier und Jetzt.
